The VT Six

In the end it was these six republican reps who made today’s veto override a reality. Thanks to them thinking deeper than then their party’s line, VT is the first state to legislatively legalize same-sex marriage. Quite the accomplishment and coming on the heals of the court decision in IA, a tremendous new wave of support for what is clearly this period’s pressing civil rights issue.
Interesting side-note: I previously complained about Sonny Audette, D-South Burlington who was opposing the measure on religious grounds. Turns out he “woke up Tuesday morning barely able to get out of bed. Making it to the Statehouse for the override vote was out of the question.” (Burlington Free Press)
