Pittsburgh Perl Workshop: Day 1

I’m taking a break from getting killed by 15-441 and spending the morning at ppw2007. I’ll post some thoughts on the sessions here.

Keynote
This was mostly a look at the demographics of the perl community which didn’t interest me too much. My main takeaway from the Perl Survey is that the community (and by correlation Perl’s use) has stagnated. This is sad, but logical given that Perl is no longer seen as trendy.

PIR Tutorial (Allison Randal)
PIR looks very cool. Parrot seems quite amazing too, for that matter. I hope this can actually make into the wild. I’m also thinking PIR (and PASM) would make for a great alternative to x86 asm for teaching. Anyway, cool stuff and I love seeing highly technical talks given by women.

Apache Hacks (Beth Skwarecki)
Good talk, but nothing really new and/or interesting for me.

Name Badges
Last year they had quite possibly the best designed name badges I have ever seen. On that back side was the schedule printed in such a way that you could adjust the folded edge such that the currently applicable part of the schedule was always available. Sadly, this year, the schedule’s just on a separate sheet of paper.

I’ll update this with more later
