The lack of barriers to entry in the media business is devaluing media businesses.

The lack of barriers to entry in human interaction, caused by social media, is devaluing personal communication.

Hundreds of “happy birthday” messages sent via facebook turn into more of a nuisance than a joy to receive.

A very astute observation.  I’ve been pondering the same thing (albeit in a much less eloquent fashion).
